The Diners Club International credit
card is similar to the American
Express credit card in that it
requires its users to payoff their
charges one month at a time. It can
currently be used to fund an online
casino account at certain websites
and American players are banned from
using it due to certain restrictions
the government has placed on online
gaming by American citizens.
The Diners Club International card
was the first credit card to come
onto the scene. It was developed in
1950 by Frank McNamara. He was
entertaining a group of businessmen
and women at a local restaurant when
he realized that he had left his
wallet at home and had no way to pay
for the meal. He knew the
establishment's owner and left his
business card instead as an IOU,
paying for the dinner later. This
idea inspired him to develop a card
that would allow people to 'pay' for
their meals via credit and as a
proof of the individual's identity.
With financial backing, McNamara
launched the Diners Club
International credit card with 200
initial members. The card was
initially accepted by twenty-seven
restaurants that he personally
arranged. By 2002, the membership of
the Diners Club International credit
card soared to over eight million
world wide, with twenty different
countries accepting it as a form of
payment. Six million different
establishments now accept this card.
What started out as a restaurant
credit card, the Diners Club
International now offers its members
a wider variety of services
including travel insurance to
airport lounge access to executive
golf club memberships. It is also
accepted at select online casinos
and poker rooms to fund cash
accounts for players and also as a
way to withdraw their casino
winnings.
